Sony has recently canceled several live service games, including Bluepoint’s God of War multiplayer game and Bend’s Unknown Live Game, due to concerns stemming from the failure of Concord, which has been labeled the biggest flop in video game history. The company had initially planned to release 12 live titles within a couple of years but has only had significant success with one, Helldivers 2. Concord’s poor performance has led Sony to reconsider its Games-as-Service projects, prompting cancellations and a reevaluation of ongoing developments.

Previous attempts at creating multiplayer aspects for popular franchises, like The Last of Us Online and Spider-Man: The Great Web, were plagued with issues before Concord’s launch. Guerilla Games is still working on a live service project related to Horizon Zero Dawn, but overall, the trend of single-player franchises transitioning to live service has met with limited success.

Amidst these challenges, Bungie’s upcoming title, Marathon, touted as a significant new entry in the extraction shooter genre, is seen as a potential success for Sony, especially following its acquisition of Bungie, which will enable cross-platform availability. However, skepticism remains about the viability of live service games following recent failures.
