Hawaii County Civil Defense has closed several beach parks on the Big Island’s west coast due to high surf warnings and hazardous ocean conditions, effective until 6 p.m. today. Parks including Kahalu’u, Laaloa, Pahoehoe, Kohanaiki, and Mahukona are closed, and others may follow. A high surf warning predicts wave heights of 8 to 12 feet along the coast from Upolu Point to South Point. National Weather Service forecasters have extended this warning as large west-northwest swells peak tonight, creating dangerous conditions for swimming and marine activities. Beachgoers are advised to heed safety instructions and expect possible road closures due to seawater surges impacting coastal infrastructure.
