Colombian officials report that over 80 people have been killed in northeastern Colombia amid failed peace negotiations with the National Liberation Army (ELN). The violence, which has also resulted in around 20 injuries, includes the death of community leader Carmelo Guerrero and individuals involved in peace talks. Three negotiators were kidnapped in the Catatumbo region, prompting evacuations of thousands seeking safety. Colombian troops have been deployed to aid affected communities, with food and hygiene supplies being sent to the region. The ELN is engaged in clashes with former FARC members over control of coca plantations. Authorities urge the ELN to cease violence to allow humanitarian aid access. The fifth peace dialogue is scheduled for December 17, 2023, in Mexico City.
