Pete Hegseth’s nomination for Defense Secretary has come under scrutiny due to allegations regarding his drinking habits, as indicated by statements from his ex-wife, Samantha Hegseth. She told the FBI that he drinks frequently. This came after the Senate Armed Services Committee’s confirmation hearings, during which Democrats raised concerns about sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, both of which Hegseth denied.
Senators Roger Wicker and Jack Reed were briefed on Samantha’s FBI statements following the hearings, which Wicker stated were mischaracterized in reports. Hegseth’s former sister-in-law, Danielle Hegseth, submitted an affidavit alleging physical or sexual abuse by him, which Hegseth’s attorney dismissed as unfounded. Despite the controversies, Hegseth maintains that the allegations are part of a smear campaign. The committee’s vote to advance his nomination was split along party lines, with Democrats opposing him.
