In Iowa, proposed changes to scientific standards have raised concerns as the state’s Education Ministry plans to remove the terms “climate change” and “evolution.” At a recent public feedback forum, approximately 40 individuals, including teachers, scientists, and parents, expressed discontent with the proposed standards, which now use the phrase “climate trends” instead. The Education Ministry asserts that while it sets academic standards, each district selects its own curriculum. The revision process follows a five-step approach, including the establishment of a revised team consisting of various stakeholders. Professor Jerid Kresez noted discrepancies between the revised team’s submission and the state’s proposed standards, highlighting confusion over the removal of key terms. The Education Ministry will gather public feedback until February 3 and form a second review team to address community concerns before finalizing the standards. This revision process aims to ensure clarity and stakeholder involvement before adoption by the State Board of Education.
