Syria’s provisional President Ahmad Al Shalaa is preparing for his first international trip to Saudi Arabia, accompanied by Foreign Minister Asad Al Cha-Bani. Their arrival was officially acknowledged by Saudi media, and they met with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman at Al Yamama Palace. Saudi Arabia, previously supportive of anti-Assad factions during the Syrian civil war, has shifted its approach after a decade of conflict, now recognizing Assad’s regime.
Al Shalaa’s trip follows the emergence of new dynamics, such as the rebranding of the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which previously had ties to Al Qaeda, and their support for Ukraine. The Syrian provisional government is attempting to maintain positive public relations while navigating relationships with Iran and Russia, both crucial for military support. The visit comes amid ongoing challenges from extremist groups within Syria, including a recent car bombing in Manbij that resulted in casualties. Saudi Arabia is actively engaging in dialogue to reshape its role in the region, hoping to lift sanctions and enhance cooperation.
