Stephen Rawine Nelson, a 37-year-old Texan man, was executed via lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, for the murder of Rev. Clint Dobson during a robbery at North Point Baptist Church in Arlington. Nelson was convicted of beating and suffocating the 28-year-old pastor with a plastic bag, while also severely injuring church secretary Judy Elliott, who survived the attack. His execution marked the second in the U.S. in 2023, and the first in Texas since October 2024.
Before his execution, Nelson expressed a sense of peace and love, speaking to his wife Helen Noah Dubois as the lethal dose of pentobarbital was administered. He was declared dead 24 minutes later. Nelson had a troubling background with a history of legal issues dating back to childhood. His conviction was supported by evidence including fingerprints, blood at the crime scene, and surveillance footage.
Despite appeals and claims of inadequate legal representation, all requests for stays of execution were denied by state and federal courts. The family of Rev. Dobson chose to focus on his memory rather than on Nelson’s actions, while others, including the survivor Judy Elliott’s family, expressed a desire to forgive him. Nelson was also charged with another prison murder while awaiting trial. Three additional executions in Texas are scheduled for the coming months.
