A severe winter storm has struck the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, prompting water rescues, power outages, and dangerous travel conditions. This storm has resulted in the first flash flood emergency of the year in eastern Kentucky and parts of West Virginia, where many water rescues have occurred. Tornado warnings were also issued, with at least one confirmed tornado in Kentucky. Over 85,000 homes and businesses experienced power outages across several states due to heavy rain and ice accumulation.
Travel disruptions include over 500 flight cancellations and numerous accidents reported across the Midwest and Northeast. As the storm progresses, a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain is expected for New England, with hazardous travel conditions likely continuing into Friday.
The current storm is the beginning of an active winter pattern, with more storms forecasted to hit the Northern U.S. in the coming weeks. Another significant storm is predicted to develop within 72 hours, bringing further winter weather challenges to the same regions affected by this week’s storm. The situation remains fluid, with potential for destructive icing and additional storms anticipated next week.
