A tragic plane crash off the western coast of Alaska has resulted in the deaths of all 10 people on board, including nine passengers and a pilot, Chad Antille, aged 34. The small commuter aircraft operated by Bering Air went missing shortly after departing from Unalakleet on Thursday afternoon. The wreckage was discovered approximately 34 miles from its intended destination, and recovery operations are ongoing, complicated by harsh weather conditions, including heavy snow and high winds.
Among the deceased passengers are Lean Ryan, 52; Donnell Erickson, 58; and several others. Officials have reported that the crash’s cause is under investigation, with various factors, including poor weather and communication failures, hindering the search efforts. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting an investigation, involving both ground and remote experts.
A vigil was held to honor the victims, with community leaders urging support for each other during this difficult time. Local Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski acknowledged the profound loss experienced by the community, especially given the close-knit nature of rural Alaskan towns that often rely on small aircraft for transportation. Local tributes highlighted the contributions of some victims, like Rhone Baumgartner and Kameron Hartvigson, who worked for the Alaska Tribal Health Consortium and were dedicated to serving their communities.
