In Hong Kong, the excitement surrounding the naming of two giant panda cubs, born on August 15, 2024, has captivated residents. The cubs will make their media debut at a ceremony at Ocean Park on February 15, 2025, with submissions for their names opening to the public. Hong Kong leader John Lee highlighted that the city now has the largest population of captive pandas outside mainland China. The cubs will be introduced to visitors each weekend, with special access available for a fee.
During previews, the cubs showcased their playful personalities, with the female exhibiting more activity than her brother. The pandas represent both a conservation effort and a boost to the local economy, referred to as the “Panda Economy” by officials. While the influx of tourists has been welcomed, Ocean Park is still recovering from significant financial losses, and caring for the pandas poses additional costs. Despite this, park officials believe the pandas will ultimately help enhance revenue through increased visitor interest. The pandas also play a role in China’s soft power diplomacy as they are regarded as a national symbol.
