Multiple winter storms have affected Susquehanna Valley this month, leading to extensive salting of sidewalks, driveways, and roads for safety. However, environmentalists are raising concerns about the impact of road salt on local waterways. Researchers have been testing York County’s waterways to assess salt levels and their environmental implications. Jodi Sulpizio, coordinator of the Master Watershed Stewards Program, noted that over half of the sampled streams showed concerning chloride levels. Mark Rentz, a Basin Steward, stressed that while salting has benefits, excessive use can harm wildlife and lead to infrastructure costs due to salt damage. To mitigate oversalting, environmentalists recommend using only necessary amounts of salt and reusing leftovers. They emphasize the importance of public awareness regarding the effects of salting on streams. The results of the waterway tests are available for further insights.
