FC Cincinnati set a new MLS trade record on Monday by acquiring Brazilian midfielder Evander from the Portland Timbers for a guaranteed $12 million and an additional $150,000 incentive. Portland retains a percentage of future sales and trades for Evander, who signed a designated player contract with Cincinnati until 2027, with an option for 2028.
This acquisition is part of the league’s new cash player trade mechanism, allowing teams to trade players using cash instead of general allocation funds. Evander is expected to fill the gap left by Luciano Acosta, who was recently traded to FC Dallas and earned the 2023 Landon Donovan MLS MVP title.
In a parallel move, Portland is set to acquire David Da Costa from French League 1 for approximately $6 million, marking a significant transition for both teams.
Evander previously played for Portland for two seasons after joining from FC Midtjylland. He had a strong 2024 season with 34 goal contributions and will now join forces with fellow designated players Kévin Denkey and Luca Orellano at Cincy. Evander expressed enthusiasm about joining the club and contributing to its ambitions for future success.
The trade follows Evander’s criticism of the Timbers’ management after the team’s playoff exit, ultimately leading to his departure. The Timbers are now focused on rebuilding their offense with new additions.
