Officials in Oklahoma and Texas are warning of an increased fire risk next week as Oklahoma assesses the damage from devastating wildfires that occurred recently. A wildfire fueled by strong winds swept through the state, resulting in over 400 damaged homes. Residents, such as Jeremy Cook from Stillwater, evacuated their homes, only to return and find them destroyed. At least 74 homes around Stillwater have been lost, with fire crews struggling to contain the fires due to strong winds and low humidity.
The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management reported four deaths linked to the fires and severe winds, including a tragic incident involving Allen Ferguson, who died while fighting the wildfire with his son, who was severely injured. In Texas, conditions are also ripe for wildfires, with one significant fire near Fredericksburg burning approximately 14 square miles and only 40% contained.
Wind gusts have been incredibly strong, causing severe visibility issues, resulting in car accidents, including three fatalities in Texas. As investigations into the damage continue, Oklahoma’s governor expressed commitment to rebuilding efforts alongside the affected communities.
