At GDC 2025, Pearl Abyss discussed their upcoming single-player action-adventure game, Crimson Desert, which utilizes a new engine called Blackspace. The game features Kliff, a mercenary embroiled in conflicts that endanger the world of Pywel. During the presentation, the developers showcased the engine’s capabilities, including realistic simulations of fire, water, light, and weather effects.
The Blackspace engine is designed to render the detailed medieval fantasy world seamlessly, with impressive attention to environmental elements, such as dynamic fabrics and realistic interactions with water. For instance, players will see only the parts of Kliff’s horse that come into contact with water getting wet, a first in gaming.
While the gameplay, including combat and exploration, looks promising, no hands-on experience was provided during the demo. Crimson Desert is slated for release in the latter half of 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. An earlier version of the article mistakenly stated that Crimson Desert used the same engine as Black Desert Online; however, Blackspace is an entirely independent engine.
