A North Carolina mother, Shannon Nutting, faced a heartbreaking situation when her family’s planned cruise vacation turned into a nightmare. After driving eight hours to Port Canaveral, Florida, she discovered that her 16-year-old son, who has special needs and only possesses a student ID, was denied boarding despite Nutting having checked documentation requirements in advance. The cruise staff, including a supervisor, remained unsympathetic to her pleas regarding her son’s situation, leading to Nutting and her children being unable to embark on their dream vacation.
After learning that Royal Caribbean officials acknowledged the rejection was due to human error, the family was offered options, including the possibility of boarding the cruise two days later in Cozumel, Mexico. However, Nutting declined and chose to spend a few days in Florida instead. Royal Caribbean offered a full cruise refund, but Nutting expressed dissatisfaction, stating that it did not cover the expenses incurred to reach the port, and emphasized that she had ensured all necessary documentation was in order. As of the report, Royal Caribbean had not responded to the situation.
