Daniela Krett, the last known female member of the Baader-Meinhof Group (also known as the Red Army Faction or RAF), is on trial in Germany facing 14 criminal charges, including armed robbery and attempted murder. At 66, Krett was arrested in February 2023 while living quietly in Berlin, where she engaged in community activities such as walking dogs and teaching mathematics. Police found weapons, including anti-tank bullets and a Kalashnikov, in her apartment.
The RAF was notorious for its violent campaign in the 1970s and 1980s, responsible for numerous murders. Krett is linked to a “third generation” of the group, which continued criminal activities, including at least 12 armed robberies, after the faction disbanded in the 1990s. The current trial focuses on her alleged involvement in a 2015 armed robbery of an armored vehicle in Bremen, but does not directly address the group’s terrorist actions from previous decades.
The trial is being held under tight security, with protests from various left and right groups outside the courtroom. Krett’s lawyers have criticized the trial for intertwining robbery charges with past RAF allegations, asserting that there is insufficient evidence tying her to the crimes. The court proceedings are expected to continue until the end of the year.
