Colorado manager Dion Sanders has received a five-year contract extension worth $54 million, making him one of the highest-paid college football coaches in the nation. His base salary will rise to $10 million by 2025, further increasing to $12 million by 2029. If he accepts another coaching position before the contract ends in 2025, he will owe a buyout starting at $12 million.
Sanders has significantly improved Colorado’s football program, leading them to a bowl game within two seasons after inheriting a team that finished 1-11 in 2022. The Buffaloes became one of the most-watched teams in college football, drawing over 54 million viewers during the 2024 season.
In a statement, Sanders expressed his commitment to building the program and nurturing young men. The university noted that his leadership has led to a 20% increase in applications, with a notable rise among Black/African American applicants and other diverse groups. Attendance at home games also surged, with the Buffs selling out almost all home games for the first time since 1996, contributing significantly to the local economy.
Colorado’s athletic director, Rick George, praised Sanders for revolutionizing college football and reinvigorating the program’s status as a national contender.
