Joelle Pineau, head of AI research at Meta, is leaving the company amid its significant investments in AI to remain competitive in the industry. Pineau, who joined Facebook in 2017, announced her departure on LinkedIn, stating that it was time for others to take the lead as Meta prepares for its next phase. She expressed gratitude for her experiences and confirmed her final day would be May 30th. Under her leadership, a team of around 1,000 focused on AI advancements, including the development of Meta’s Llama, an open-source language model aimed at establishing industry standards.
Pineau’s exit may challenge Meta’s competitiveness against rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, especially since CEO Mark Zuckerberg has committed up to $65 billion for AI projects this year. While she has a longstanding career in AI, her departure follows recent leadership changes at Meta, including the exits of other senior executives. Pineau plans to continue teaching computer science at McGill University in Montreal.
