The Michigan Lighthouse has received $106,000 for restoration efforts on the Charbois South Pier Lighthouse in Lake Michigan and the Galloc Lighthouse in Lake Superior. Funded by the Michigan Historical Preservation Office (SHPO) through the sale of “Save Our Lights” license plates, this grant is part of a program celebrated for awarding over $2.9 million for lighthouse preservation over 25 years. The restoration projects include roof repairs, cleaning, painting, and the installation of historically accurate doors.
The Galloc Lighthouse, built in 1867 and located on an island off the Kanewoff Peninsula, remains an active navigation aid and will undergo significant restoration, including cedar roof cleaning and exterior painting. Meanwhile, the Charbois South Pier Lighthouse, built in 1948, will be cleaned and painted as part of a $60,000 grant and a matching $80,500 fund. This lighthouse is essential to the local identity of Charlevoix and is managed by the Charlevoix Historical Society.
The Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program helps preserve the state’s rich lighthouse heritage, with over 120 lighthouses along its 3,200-mile coastline. Many of these lighthouses serve as tourist attractions, offering tours, bed-and-breakfast accommodations, and museums, highlighting the historical significance of Michigan’s maritime heritage.
