Hungary has officially withdrawn from the International Criminal Court (ICC), as confirmed by a senior official in Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government. This decision came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary, which coincided with an ICC arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Orban had previously expressed his support for Netanyahu, claiming the ICC’s warrant “has no effect” in Hungary and labeling the court as a “political court.”
The ICC, which prosecutes serious international crimes such as genocide and crimes against humanity, issued the warrant based on what it deemed a “reasonable basis” for criminal liability concerning actions taken by Israeli leaders during the conflict with Hamas. Netanyahu has vehemently criticized the ICC’s decision, calling it “anti-Semitism.”
Hungary, a founding member of the ICC, is set to become the first European Union country to withdraw, although its departure will not alter ongoing legal proceedings at the international court. Orban’s government has been known for fostering strong ties with Israel and criticizing international organizations it views as infringing on national sovereignty.
Netanyahu praised Hungary’s withdrawal as a “bold and principled” stance, advocating for other democracies to stand against what he termed a “corrupt organization.” Former Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also commended Orban for his support, criticizing the ICC for losing moral authority in its actions against Israel.
Despite the symbolic implications of Hungary’s exit, the ICC remains operational and has faced similar challenges in the past. The article further highlights that various countries, including the U.S., Russia, and China, as well as Israel, do not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, while some European member states have indicated they will not enforce arrest warrants against Israeli leaders.
The backdrop to these events is the ongoing military conflict in Gaza, ignited by a Hamas attack that resulted in numerous casualties. Israeli military operations in response have led to significant loss of life in Gaza, deepening the crisis and fueling international debates regarding justice and accountability in armed conflict.
