Air travel is on the brink of a significant transformation, moving from traditional paperboarding passes to a digital travel qualification managed via mobile phones. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has finalized plans for this digital credential, which will store all passport information and integrate seamlessly into travelers’ journeys. The new “Journey Pass” will update automatically with any flight changes and utilize facial recognition for identification, allowing passengers to board without showing documentation.
While this technology does not have an official launch date, several airlines, including British Airways, Air France-KLM, Finnair, and Saudia Airlines, are already piloting the system. The aim is to modernize airport processes that have remained largely unchanged for decades, creating an internationally compatible standard.
The benefits of this system include reduced wait times, easier identity verification, and a more personalized travel experience. However, concerns about privacy and the potential exclusion of older generations from increasingly digitized processes remain.
