Michael Schuer, a former Disney World menu production manager, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to pay nearly $700,000 for hacking into Disney’s restaurant software. He altered menu items to falsely claim they were free of allergens such as peanuts and shellfish, which could have severe consequences for individuals with food allergies. Schuer, who was fired in June for fraud, admitted to violating the company’s software multiple times between July and September.
In addition to altering menu information, he redirected QR codes and targeted fellow employees through a denial-of-service attack. After an FBI investigation, he was arrested in October 2023, although he initially denied involvement. The FBI discovered personal information about several employees during the investigation. Schuer’s hacking efforts were ultimately detected before the modified menus were used at Disney restaurants.
