The company revealed its plans for a customizable electric truck in Long Beach, California, expecting to offer it for under $20,000 by the end of 2026, factoring in a federal EV tax credit. Slate Auto, backed by high-profile investors like Jeff Bezos, aims to provide vehicles that are accessible to the average American, contrasting with the industry’s push towards high-tech, expensive models.
The truck features a basic design with manual windows and no factory-installed infotainment system. It can convert from a two-seater pickup to a five-seater SUV and offers a range of customization options, with over 100 accessories available for personalization. Customers can place a $50 refundable booking for the truck, which comes standard with a 150-mile range from a 52.7 kWh battery, 17-inch wheels, and a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds.
Slate Auto’s approach is to keep manufacturing costs low by avoiding traditional paint jobs and instead offering wraps to customize the vehicle’s appearance. The company emphasizes DIY modifications and easy installation for customers, creating a unique ownership experience. Despite the challenges faced by other American EV startups, Slate Auto believes in its affordable model and aims to create vehicles that buyers will take pride in. The startup has raised over $111 million and employs nearly 400 people, focusing on domestic manufacturing to navigate industry instability.
