The UN World Food Programme (WFP) reports that Israel has halted humanitarian aid to Gaza, leading to a severe food crisis. They have delivered their last food supplies to community kitchens, which serve about one million hot meals daily. These kitchens are expected to run out of food in days. The situation worsened after Israel cut off aid on March 2, in efforts to pressure Hamas following a lapse in a ceasefire.
Currently, food stocks and resources in Gaza are critically low, with bakeries closed and food prices skyrocketing by up to 1,400%. Malnutrition rates are rising sharply, affecting vulnerable populations including children and pregnant women. The World Health Organization has called for an end to the blockade, emphasizing the urgent need for aid.
WFP officials indicate that despite some food aid being available, it would only reach half the population, covering only 25% of daily nutritional needs. Desperation has led many residents to sell personal belongings or barter for food. The Israeli government has defended its actions, citing concerns about Hamas misappropriating aid. Tensions remain high, and the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate as conflict persists, resulting in over 51,000 fatalities in Gaza.
