The Atlanta Braves have signed veteran outfielder Eddie Rosario to a major league contract, while outfielder Jarred Kelenic has been optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, Zach Thompson was designated for assignment. Kelenic, a former top prospect, has struggled significantly this season with a .167 batting average and a high strikeout rate. The Braves acquired him in a series of trades that helped them shed dead money, but his performance has not justified the investment.
Rosario returns to the Braves after a challenging period, including stints with the Guardians and Nationals. He played a key role in the Braves’ 2021 World Series run and signed a two-year deal to come back to Atlanta, but has not performed at an above-average level since 2020.
Thompson, who also faced injury issues lately, will be subject to trade or waiver decisions within a week. He has limited MLB experience, pitching mainly as a starter with a career 4.36 ERA, but retains minor league options, which could appeal to teams needing rotation depth.
