In a mass shooting in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at least 11 people were injured, and one suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jerius Davis, was killed by police. The incident occurred around 11:50 PM on a Saturday night. According to the Myrtle Beach Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance involving multiple individuals, during which a gun was fired.
Mayor Brenda Bethune praised the swift action of officers, stating they potentially saved lives. She stressed that the incident was isolated and does not reflect the safety of the area, especially during tourism season. Despite the shooting, visitors like Sebastian McMillon plan to continue visiting Myrtle Beach, expressing confidence in the community’s safety.
An independent investigation will be conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Department, while an internal review will also take place. Mayor Bethune assured that the results will be made public in about three weeks. Police Chief Amy Prock noted that major crimes have been increasing since 2015, attributing it to new surveillance technologies. Rep. Nancy Mace expressed her devastation over the event.
