President Joe Biden commuted the life sentence of indigenous activist Leonard Peltier, who was convicted in 1977 for the deaths of two FBI agents during a standoff at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1975. His case has drawn significant attention from indigenous rights advocates and human rights organizations, with many arguing he was wrongfully convicted. Biden’s decision came after decades of lobbying and protests on Peltier’s behalf. Notably, several prominent figures, including civil rights leaders and celebrities, have supported his release.

In addition to Peltier, Biden announced pardons and commutations for about 2,500 individuals convicted of nonviolent drug crimes, including his son Hunter, and several other political figures. Despite Biden’s commutation, Peltier remains incarcerated at USP Coleman in Florida due to opposition from law enforcement and past administrations, which denied his requests for clemency. At 80 years old, Peltier is facing significant health issues, which have intensified calls for his release.
