Stellantis has shifted away from its Hemi V8 engines, particularly in the Dodge and Chrysler lineup of sedans and muscle cars. The replacement is the new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine called the Hurricane, which promises more power and efficiency than the old V8s.
Initially developed in response to Ford’s EcoBoost engines starting in 2013, the Hurricane engine made its debut in 2022. It offers two versions: a standard variant producing 420 horsepower and a high-power variant with 550 horsepower—both outperforming the Hemi V8 with less displacement. The Hurricane is lightweight, utilizing advanced technologies to minimize weight, such as Plasma Transfer Wire Arc Technology for the cylinder walls.
Despite fan disappointment over the absence of a V8 in the new Dodge Charger, the Hurricane engine will be available in the upcoming model as a gas-powered option, with both variants expected to attract attention for their performance capabilities. Although some fans remain loyal to the V8, the innovative design of the Hurricane may establish a new identity for Dodge’s muscle cars, blending performance with modern engine technology.
