A fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has led to the return of the bodies of four Israeli hostages, who were taken during a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. The deceased, identified as Tsach Idan, Itzhak Elgarat, Ohad Yaharomi, and Shlomo Mantool, were confirmed dead by the Hostages and Missing Family Forum. Their remains were handed over to Israeli authorities in a private ceremony, avoiding Hamas rituals.
In exchange, Israel is set to release a total of 642 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children arrested without charges. The arrangement is part of the ongoing negotiations following a 42-day ceasefire, and protests have emerged over past “humiliation rituals” conducted by Hamas during previous hostage releases.
The Red Cross facilitated the transfer, with released Palestinian detainees returning to Gaza amid emotional reunions with their families. This included scenes of joy and distress, as many prisoners appeared physically weakened. Notably, among those released is Nael Barguti, a long-serving political prisoner.
As tensions persist, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under pressure from far-right factions to resume military actions, with accusations from both sides regarding violations of the ceasefire agreement.
