The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has released its investigation results regarding the Hamas massacre that occurred on October 7, 2023. Initially started in November 2023, the investigation was expanded in March 2024 under IDF Chief of Staff General Herzi Halevi. The report did not provide specific recommendations but indicated that Israeli forces would assess the situation further.
The attack from Hamas involved between 5,000 to 5,600 militants and included the firing of nearly 4,700 rockets. It resulted in the deaths of 829 Israeli civilians, 76 foreigners, and 415 security personnel, with 251 hostages taken to Gaza. An IDF official cited a fundamental failure in preparing for the attack, which Hamas had been planning for nearly seven years.
The report outlined a detailed timeline of the attacks, starting around 11 PM on October 6, just before a simultaneous assault was launched at dawn on October 7. The IDF declared a state of emergency shortly afterward as thousands of attackers infiltrated Israel.
The IDF acknowledged significant intelligence failures, including a misjudgment of Hamas’s capabilities and intentions, as well as missed warning signs leading up to the assaults. While the IDF had focused on threats from Iran and Hezbollah, it underestimated Hamas, viewing it as a lesser threat.
Additionally, the IDF’s air force met preparation criteria, but those did not align with the demands of a surprise mass attack. The investigation concludes that future strategies focusing on prevention and reevaluating threat perceptions are critical. It emphasizes that the oversight of potential attack scenarios must improve to prevent similar failures in the future.
