Schwartz encouraged consumers to avoid a broad range of Amazon-owned services, such as Whole Foods, Prime Video, and Twitch.
The boycott gained traction on social media, with support from celebrities like John Leguizamo, Bette Midler, and Mark Ruffalo. People’s Union USA describes itself as a grassroots movement focused on economic control rather than a political party or protest. Despite the boycott’s momentum, sales data indicated that Amazon’s sales rose by 1% during the February 28th boycott, highlighting the company’s resilience given its massive daily revenue.
The People’s Union has announced plans for more boycotts, including a boycott against NestlĂ© scheduled for March 21-28. Activists, including pastor Jamal Bryant, have also called for a 40-day boycott of Target to protest against moves away from diversity and inclusion policies. These economic boycotts aim to raise awareness of various social and political issues, prompting consumers to consider the impact of their spending choices.
