Social Media Service X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on Monday, causing intermittent outages for some users. Although site owner Elon Musk labeled it a “massive cyberattack,” he did not provide evidence to support this claim, and threat researchers have not confirmed the details. Musk suggested the attack originated from IP addresses associated with Ukraine.
Experts noted that pinpointing the source of DDoS attacks is challenging, as attackers often use compromised devices globally to obscure their true origins. David Warburton from F5 Labs explained that while DDoS attacks might appear to come from a specific location, they usually are distributed worldwide to bypass defenses.
The Darkstorm Team, a Palestinian hacking group that specializes in DDoS attacks, claimed responsibility for the incident. Their goal includes destabilizing major digital platforms and they often target entities in the U.S., Ukraine, the UAE, and Israel. The group’s activities typically involve using large botnets composed of infected devices to launch these attacks.
Given that X is one of the most visited websites globally, DDoS incidents like this attract significant attention from cybersecurity experts. However, many prominent cybersecurity firms have declined to provide comments regarding the causes of the outages experienced by X.
