Israel conducted multiple airstrikes in Lebanon following rocket fire directed at Israeli territory, reportedly targeting Hezbollah’s rocket launchers and command centers. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported that the airstrikes resulted in seven deaths, including children, and 40 injuries. Various armed groups, including Hezbollah and Palestinian factions, are active in Lebanon, but no one has claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. Hezbollah denied involvement and reaffirmed its commitment to a ceasefire. In response to the escalating tensions, the Lebanese army dismantled three rocket launchers and initiated an investigation.
The recent rocket fire came shortly after Israel intensified its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, leading to interceptions of rockets in northern Israel without casualties. The situation poses challenges to a fragile ceasefire mediated by the US and France, previously established to end over a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Under the ceasefire agreement, the Lebanese army was to increase its troop presence in southern Lebanon to prevent attacks on Israel, with Hezbollah expected to withdraw its fighters and weapons. Despite this, Israeli airstrikes have continued, targeting Hezbollah assets, as Israel still occupies five locations in southern Lebanon that it claims are necessary for border security.
Lebanon’s President Joseph Orn and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed concerns over escalating violence and the risk of renewed conflict. The UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon urged both sides to commit to de-escalation. Hezbollah, facing pressure to provide economic aid while managing public sentiment regarding disarmament, has linked its actions to solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. The ongoing conflict has had devastating effects, with around 4,000 deaths in Lebanon and significant displacement of residents. Israel aims to facilitate the return of expelled communities and reduce Hezbollah’s influence along the border.
