Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison expressed no regrets about trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Max Christie and a first-round pick, just eight months after Doncic led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals. Harrison defended the trade, emphasizing the team’s focus on acquiring two-way players like Anthony Davis to enhance their championship competitiveness. Since the trade on February 1, the Mavericks have struggled with a 13-20 record and currently sit in 10th place in the Western Conference. In contrast, the Lakers have thrived, holding the third position with a 23-13 record.
Harrison believes the Mavericks can still be a “championship caliber team” if they remain healthy, despite setbacks, including Davis’s injury shortly after joining the team. He pointed out that not all of his trades have been immediately praised, citing skepticism over the acquisition of Kyrie Irving in 2023, which ultimately turned beneficial for the Mavericks.
Doncic, a five-time All-NBA first-team player, was expected to sign a lucrative contract extension with the Mavericks this summer but was surprised by the team’s decision to trade him. Harrison reflected on the importance of defense in championship pursuits and the need for teams to evaluate trades holistically. He also acknowledged the passionate Dallas fanbase, emphasizing that their support is crucial to the team’s goals. Harrison affirmed his commitment to the Mavericks, stating he intends to fulfill his three-year contract and continue building the team in Dallas, where he and his family plan to stay.
