Sam’s Club, a Walmart-owned membership warehouse, is transforming its grocery payment systems by phasing out traditional checkouts in 600 stores and implementing an AI-driven approach to create a more seamless shopping experience. The new “Scan & Go” system, launched in April 2024, allows members to scan items using the SAM’s Club Mobile app and employs AI to validate purchases as customers exit, eliminating the need for receipt checks.
Chris Nicholas, Sam’s Club president and CEO, announced these plans at the 2025 Investment Community Conference, emphasizing the rapid and scalable nature of this retail transformation. The Grapevine, Texas store is the first to feature the upgraded “Just Walk”/“Just Go” system aimed at enhancing efficiency and customer experience, along with AI-designed features intended to create a more enjoyable work environment for staff.
While Walmart is also exploring AI technology, its main competitor, Costco, is maintaining traditional checkout lanes. Sam’s Club highlights that their AI implementation not only improves operational efficiency but also fosters better employee engagement by allowing more time for meaningful interactions with customers, ultimately driving loyalty. The company continues to focus on both member satisfaction and employee support, reinforcing a culture that contributes to its success.
